Description

I created Crown and Coral to explore sovereignty and the preservation of heritage within the African diaspora. In this portrait, the gele and coral beads are not merely accessories; they are symbols of identity, authority, and ancestral connection. The painting centers on the concept of “carrying one’s home.” The vibrant orange of the gele acts as a crown, while the structured coral beads represent a foundation of cultural pride. These warm elements are set against a cool, dappled background of energetic brushstrokes, symbolizing the “noise” and movement of life in a new environment.

Through the integration of layered acrylics and raw charcoal, I mirror the duality of the subject’s experience—finding a sense of permanence and “royalty” amidst a shifting landscape. While the background feels fluid, the subject remains anchored. This work is a tribute to those who navigate unfamiliar territories while keeping their internal sanctuary intact.
