At The Table, Again

In this work, I explore the complex negotiation of love and control within the domestic sphere. I have placed my subject, a daughter, at the familiar family table, confronting a paternal figure whose back is turned yet whose hands reach out in a gesture of expectation. I used the floral wallpaper—once a symbol of sisterly joy—to now frame the rigid boundaries of duty. The transition of the yellow dress from a shade of boldness to one of vulnerability mirrors her internal struggle: a gaze that is simultaneously resigned and defiant. This painting is my critique of the silent bargains daughters endure, where autonomy is often bartered for tradition and security. By emphasizing the tactile quality of the paint and the tension in the figures’ postures, I invite the viewer to question the true cost of familial loyalty and the immense courage required to refuse a pre-written future, even when it is presented in the name of love.
